Test Everything

“Test everything. Hold on to the good.”

1 Thessalonians 5:21

Sometimes Christians are displayed as simple because they never challenge what they are told. It is assumed that Christians hold to a blind faith or some sort of idiotic faith, not based on reason, but on something magical. But didn’t our God crate reason? Didn’t the Lord of All create logic as well? It is not bad to question things in our church, our habits and even in our faith. Questioning is not the enemy of the Christian faith. After all, the Christian faith has stood up under such questioning for close to two thousand years. It will not fold just because someone started to question its validity.

But it is in the method of testing that we have to concern ourselves. We cannot simply drop one blind faith in favor of another. The scientific method can never and will never prove something that it cannot measure. And faith cannot be measured. Spirit cannot be measured. Therefore, the scientific method is not a proper judge of the Christian faith. But that does not mean that the Christian faith is beyond question. It cannot be. Anything as certain as Christianity can stand up against the most intense questioning available to man.

Yes, we must test everything, including our own beliefs. But do not lay aside the second part of that verse. Because when we find the good, we must hold onto it and make it our own. And we will find the good. So, don’t believe everything you hear and don’t trust everything that every person tells you. Test everything, because if it contains the truth, the truth will be revealed. And if it does not contain the truth, that too will be revealed.

* A disciple tests all and retains the good

Application: What misconceptions do you currently prescribe to? Can your beliefs stand under the eye of scrutiny?
